PERSONALITY:
Elena is by no means a shy or uneasy girl - if she wants to talk to someone she does, often it's the wrong person at the wrong time and place and it gets her into trouble but that never stops her, no matter how many times one would think this girl has learned her lesson. She is one of those girls who happens to retain amazing control of her emotions (save for a few, stressful occasions) and allows her logic to overcome her emotional reactions.
Months after her parents death, Elena has managed to rekindle with her past self, and now finds it very easy to stay around people and enjoy herself around them - and for the first time in a long time she is able to actually join in on their conversations without an awkward silence looming around everything that she says. Amongst all of her very prominent personality traits, one would say that she is a very determined, intelligent, resourceful, responsibile, respectful, morally righteous girl. Elena's trust plays a heavy role into this aspect of her. Trust is an incredibly important part of her life, and if she doesn't trust you then there's going to be absolutely no chance at any sort of a 'relationship' between you and her.
"Vampires can't procreate... though we love to try!"
APPEARANCE:
With dark features that are far out of place from the rest of those in the Gilbert family, Elena has always had the distinctly exotic or foreign look, her features settle nicely onto her sun kissed skin, a pair of large brown eyes are accentuated by equally dark brown hair. During the summer months the mid-back length hair changes colours, often having an array of different browns throughout; a natural highlighting from the amount of sun she gets. Unlike her vampire ancestor, Elena's hair is straight and not curly unless she's going to an event.
Her wide open brown eyes show the girl's vast innocence with the hint of knowing that there's more to this world then people believe and that perhaps, Elena isn't quite as innocent as people would like to believe. At only seventeen years old she's seen and done things that people well into their lives haven't done or couldn't imagine and there's not a single day where Elena doesn't wish she couldn't take some of those things off of her hands, and forget about it.
Far more unaware of her natural beauty then the girl should be, Elena is always plesantly surprised and embarrassed when someone comments on it, despite her darker skin the lightest hint of a pink blush spreads out across her cheek bones.
HISTORY:
Born to Grayson and Miranda Gilbert late in the morning on March 19th, she was the first of two children that the Gilberts were to have to enjoy their lives with. Elena was the much desired start to the Gilbert family, their daughter who brought them so much joy and happiness. This is how the story is told at least. The truth of it all is that she wasn't born into the Gilbert family by Miranda and Grayson at all, she was thrust into their lives by her birth mother, Isobel, who was only sixteen years old at the time of her daughters birth, her father? The man that Elena has grown up to know as her uncle John.
As she grew up, Elena was blissfully unaware of the fact that she was adopted - a secret that was incredibly well put together by her mother and father. The truth of the situation was only ever fully explained to a very small, select group of people that the Gilbert's trusted entirely, Elena was never meant to know the truth of her birth until she was much older and in a place of understanding. It was Miranda's mission to help her daughter grow into a responsible and respectable girl, and it was a job that she took very seriously. By age three, Elena could carry on full conversations with the adults around her as if she were a handful of years older than her age. Her mental maturity provided her a luxury that most her age seldom get a chance to experience, a fact that brought Miranda incredible happiness as any parent would feel for the accomplishments of their children.
The Gilbert's lived as a happy, closely tied family for several years, and when the surprise (and shock) of another addition to their family brought itself to their attention. Jeremy was the second, and final child that the Gilbert's would bring into their home. Growing up as the old sister, Elena has always found herself checking over her shoulder at him, making sure that he's being responsible for himself and for others - that he's taken care of and out of harms way, as any older sibling would typically do. However, following the tragic car accidents of their parents, the need to protect him has increased beyond her control. It didn't help that he'd found his comfort in the company of unsavory accomplices - drug users and alcohol abusers. Where as her brother had become more social (though, not with the exact sort of people that she would have recommended) she had turned into a hermit crab.
Elena spent most of her days in her window sill, writing out her frustrations and sorrows in her journal. Just as she had done every single day since she was ten years old and had received her first journal from Miranda. The hopes that one day she would turn herself into an accomplished writer had been flushed down the drain with the death of her mother - it was a dream that the two of them had shared, and it didn't seem right for her to try and go on with it without the highest source of encouragement for her passion. Her brother and others call her very 'withdrawn' from every day life and even if she was talking to someone she wasn't completely there.
As a new school year began, she told herself that everything was going to be better this year - that she was going to put forth some effort, to smile and to act as if she was better, and a large part of her hoped that if she could convince everyone else of this fact that eventually... she'd believe it too. Forcing herself to overcome the events of a few months ago quickly failed her once she was back in school, everyone giving her those sad puppy looks or telling (again) how sorry they were for her loss. Acting as if she were some sort of a broken doll. Two things changed that first day for her, the first was that she quickly realized - if she wanted them to think that she was going to be okay, that she was okay, she would have to finally start being that way. The second thing that had changed was the new guy - Stefan. As soon as she had (embarrassingly) ran into him after confronting her brother in the boys bathroom, she felt .. something. Whatever it was, it was probably the first real thing, outside of frustration, that she'd experienced in the last few months.
If only she had been fully prepared for what his arrival was about to bring into her life, and not only that, but what he was about to bring back to life inside of her. Within a very, very short amount of time she found herself very much in like with him, the lingerings of something more just beneath the surface of her hardened outer shell. The one and only problem with Stefan was that there was something he was keeping very tightly bottled up inside - a secret of some sort. It bothered her that she could so easily see this. Everything about her screamed to figure it out, to coax him into telling her or by finding other means. Somehow.
It was too easy to fall in love with Stefan, there was so much about him that appealed to her - even his mystery, which occasionally provided her with more stress than she was fully prepared to deal with. Their relationship (though continually filled with secrets on his behalf), seemed to be the exact thing that she needed to bring herself back out of the cave she was living in. Too much digging brought her face to face with the conclusion that had been staring her in the face the entire time. Stefan was a vampire - and so was his brother, the mysterious, older guy who she had met on a few occasions before, their encounters always as interesting as the last. In a whirlwind of revelations and deeper feelings, Elena has now unconsciously placed herself in a very dangerous situation, stuck in the so called 'mythical' world of vampires and perhaps other creatures. Between two vampires and a witch (turns out Bonnie's grandmother wasn't quite as crazy as they had thought that she was, but then again she was dating a vampire for crying out loud - what should surprise her anymore), Elena's already previously complicated life is now filled with daily life or death struggles between her human reality and the new world that she has found herself rapidly entangled into. Being the last of the Petrova line, the doppleganger no less, her life is in more danger then ever before as more and more people find out about her and about the curse, she's constantly in trouble with every turn, now it's harder than ever to figure out who are her friends and who are her foes. What's worse then that is the fact that she also finds herself between the two vampires, each who owns a different part of her heart and want her to be with them -- who's it going to be?
"The only one I can count on is... me."
Quote:
Scowling once more at his scoff Elena shifted in her spot, tempted to just shake him by his shoulders but it wouldn't solve anything. They were at war with Katherine, is how she looked at it. Jeremy viewed herself and him as the very easy casualties of said war, it was understandable, acceptable and above and beyond all terrifying because she knew exactly where he was coming from. It would seem that they both had vastly underestimated the consequences that followed when you put yourself with a vampire, romantically or otherwise, especially in a romantic sense though. You opened yourself up for heartbreak and the uncompromising danger that it gave you but you were somehow foolish enough to want to stay with them.
Or in her case, not only to stay with him but to keep coming back for more.
Roused out of her personal musings by her brother's voice her eyes trailed over his face, taking in the deadpan expression he was using with her, watching while the flickering emotions of anger, and confusion that danced over his features. Jeremy was honest to God pissed off about what Damon had done, wasn't he? This was the exact reason she hadn't wanted to bring it up to him right now, there was so much going on inside of his head already.
As he once more completely missed a good portion of why Damon had blown up she rubbed the side of her head in exasperation. "Yes, that is true. You weren't there, Jeremy. I specifically heard Damon asking Stefan how it felt for him to be doing the stepping on toes." It wasn't a matter of what she'd inferred anymore, but a matter of what she knew to be fact and the fact was Damon was trying to protect Jeremy in his own way, and that's what set him off about Stefan interfering. Two sides to the coin.
Cocking an eyebrow at her brother she briefly ran over all the words he'd use to finish off his sentence and returned his defensive scoff with the one he did use. "I do too care." Elena mumbled like a four year old, glaring as he told her Stefan couldn't protect her. "What are you talking about, he can't protect me? He has, many times over now with Ben and Noah." To name a couple, entirely different circumstances she'd admit, but it was all the same for her, Stefan was keeping her protected. "They're preparing to end her ability to just waltz in." When or with who she didn't know yet, just another detail she was missing.
